Sofia Righetti was born in 1988 in Negrar, province of Verona, in Italy. At five months old she was diagnosed with congenital heart disease, and during the heart surgery, due to a mistake by the doctors who were operating her, a spinal cord ischemia occurs causing a spinal cord injury and loss of use of her legs.
Maybe the Motorhead would talk about “Born to lose, Live to Win”, and the victory began very early: in fact, despite what could be expected then, Sofia grows happy, healthy, physically strong and beautiful since she was a child; with a steel characterand a natural love and respect for animals, which will lead her to become vegetarian at thirteen years old, and definitely vegan at twenty-two.
She walks until the age of twelve with special prtothesis, the RGOs, until, not caring about standing up, she decided to take the wheelchair and use it to move, gaining autonomy, speed, independence and self-esteem.
“It was the best day of my life the first time I sat on a brand-new wheelchair: I could finally run, express myself, turn independently and dress as I wanted, expressing myself 100%”.
Finished attending the Liceo Scientifico Primo Levi, she moved to Bologna to attend the University of Literature and Philosophy, graduating in 2011 with a thesis in Philosophy of Medicine about the issue of animal experimentation.
Her love for rock ‘n roll music is innate and visceral, and totally reflects her energetic, rebellious and impetuous nature: ranging from Queen to Motley Crue, from Ramones to Type O Negative, from thrash metal of Destruction to punk of Sex Pistols. During her high school years she started playing electric guitar in several local punk bands (The Dickers, the Percolato, Eretiche Erotiche Erranti), but it was in Bologna (where she also attended the Music Academy 2000) where she finded her forever band, Vodka 4 Breakfast, playing in many places and events, bringing the energy and irreverence of glam metal in Emilia Romagna and other Italian regions.
Her huge passion for metal music and the desire to discover new places will lead her to travel alone and in company for the major European metal festivals and for many cities: London, Malta, Denmark, Stockholm, Solvensborg, Slovenia, Tolmin , Berlin, Mallorca, Tenerife, Barcelona, Rome are just some of the cities.
In 2009 she posed for the first time as a model for Suicide Girl, starting from that moment to get in touch and works as a model with many outstanding photographers, demonstrating shot after shot that it is certainly not the fact to “put your ass on a wheelchair” that take away the sensuality, beauty and femininity in a woman.
At the beginning of January 2012, she tried for the first time to practice a sport in her life, and the choice fell on alpine skiing, the only one that reflect the speed, aggressiveness and energy that has always characterized her. After just two years of training (winter season on the ski slopes and summer season in the gym and using handbike), always following a vegan diet, in 2014 she became the Italian Alpine Ski Champion at the FISIP National Championships, winning the gold medal in giant slalom and silver medal in special slalom, and demonstrating that a vegan diet can lead athletes to high levels of competition in a very short time.
In 2015 she was chosen as a speaker at TEDxVerona, whose talk is titled How beautiful is your mermaid tail and is seen thanks to the network all over the world.
She was also called as a guest by Licia Colò to his transmission The world together and Animals & Animals, and becomes testimonial of the Research Foundation RICERCARE, which funds scientific research without using animal experimentation. She was then contacted to work as a protagonist in a web-series called Sofia Rocks, where she played five roles in a video-blogger touring Emilia Romagna interviewing people with disabilities and not on various subjects, including sport, the art, sexuality, the right to study and work, aired on various newspapers including repubblica. it.
In 2016 she got Master Degree obtaining the maximum score and the degree with honors in Philosophy of Law with a thesis about rights of people with disabilities. Also in 2016 she moved alone for three months in Australia, Sydney, to improve the English language in the academic field, and just back in 2017, she was called by the journalist and writer Roberto Saviano to make a monologue on beauty and disability in direct to the final season of Amici on the Mediaset networks. She was also a speaker at the International Journalism Festival 2017 talking about the correct use of words in the field of disability.
Activist for animal rights and for the rights of people with disabilities, model of a vegan life and a world for everyone, proud LGBTI ally, there are many conferences that she is called as a speaker, both in elementary / middle schools / superiors to talk about disability, sports, animal rights and human potentialities; both in various anti-specist festivals as testimonial of how we can become strong and winning athletes following a vegan, ethical diet, without animal proteins and therefore not going to kill or create suffering to non-human individuals.
Her gritty, direct, fresh style manages to make people immediately empathize with her words; and her innovative concepts about disability seen as potential, and her words about respect for all individuals, whether they are human or animal, enter into mind and hearts of the listeners.
